ΑΡΧΙΤΕΚΤOΝΙΚΗ ΜΕΛΕΤΗ:

ΠΡOΓΡΑΜΜΑ:
Εγκαταστάσεις διασυνοριακού ελέγχου για τους, συνήθως παράνομα, μετακινούμενους από το Μεξικό προς τις ΗΠΑ βιομηχανικούς εργάτες και εργάτριες, 30 – 20 000 ημερησίως, ανάλογα με την εποχική ζήτηση, πάντοτε σε καθεστώς διοικητικής βίας και σε βεβαρυμένες κλιματικές συνθήκες καύσωνα και ερήμου. Περίπτερα ελέγχου διαβατηρίων, στοιχειώδεις εξυπηρετήσεις αναμονής και διημέρευσης.
ΑΡΧΙΤΕΚΤOΝΙΚΗ ΠΡOΤΑΣΗ:
Μια "κύρτωση" της επιφάνειας του εδάφους πάνω στην επίπεδη έρημο δημιουργεί ένα προστατευτικό θόλο αναμονής με διάμετρο 60μ. Τα σημεία ελέγχου – μικροί γυάλινοι κύβοι, τοποθετημένοι στη διάμετρο, που σημαδεύει το κοινό σύνορο των δύο χωρών, με μέγεθος ασήμαντο σε σχέση με την κλίμακα του θόλου - εκμηδενίζονται ως φραγμοί στην ελεύθερη κίνηση των εργαζομένων. Ο θόλος ως κολοσσιαίο στέγαστρο, πλεγμένος από τοξωτούς φορείς, όπως τα καλάθια από τα σχίνα της ερήμου του armandillo, αφήνει ένα κάνναβο από ανοίγματα προς τον ουρανό, αλλά, κυρίως, προστατεύει με τη σκιά του την αναμονή του ανθρώπινου πλήθους. Τη νύχτα φωτεινές στήλες μετασχηματίζουν το θόλο σε ένα υπερμέγεθες δημόσιο φωτιστικό των συνόρων.
BORDERDOME
in the armandillo desert
the proposed borderdome
that bores
the straight and boring border line
amidst
the extended, uniform and physically undiffrerentiated
USA-Mexican desert of El Paso
aims
in inserting a major spatial differentiality and
in establishing a significant locus
corresponding to the acute conditions
of unemployment and absolute poverty
of masses commuting
across the neighboring countries on a daily basis
a short sequence
of evenly ascending and descending
lowheight step-on spherical artificial hills
offer to the flattened landscape
an expressive punctuation
dramatizing the very moment
of twin, bothsided severe state controls
reflecting
the arbitrariness of historical order
violently bisecting the continuum of indigenous human habitat
from this point of view:
the waving surface of the row of low sandhills
may be received as the overground indication
of the latent and repressed
overt or subverted inner social tension
resembling the bubbles
emerging
along the boiling process of social unease,
whereas:
the vast room created underneath the hilltopinside the bubble chambers
is offered to the commuters
as a meeting ground of transience
for humane sociability, solidarity and relaxation
getting them to distances from
the repetitive often humiliating and definitely alienating
daily bilateral identity controls
therefore
the architectural proposal
of this roofed area
in the shape of
a lowered, shadowed and fresh protecting dome
may be taken
as prefiguring
the future melting pot and
as foretelling
the future multicultural public forum
after the bordered prehistory of humanity
would have been eliminated
after all controls would have been abolished
after pleasures would have been liberated
and when homo ludens would have been erected
in a diffused human euphoria
in a post- ethnic state borders and
post- cleansing confines and strategies era
within the same imagery
the boredom of cultural seclusion
within autistic communal orders
would give way to
the explosive creative societal immanence
and the ex - borderdome
would shine up brightly
upon the sky of the desert
proposing the glowing armandillo
as a convincing paradigm of conviviality
